“ Whole Foods as a whole isn't my most favorite grocery store. Organic shmorganic blah blah. But their wine shop... that is a different story. And the Whole Foods wine shop in the UWS is nice, y'all. It's well stocked with dozens and dozens of bottles to choose from - some you've seen elsewhere and others you haven't. The shop is easy to navigate too - separated by region - and prices aren't too crazy - bottles started at around $10 and went up from there. Worthy of a visit if you're in the neighborhood. ”
“ Not to be confused with the beer section of the Whole Foods market, this is a separate store that is part of the big Whole Foods on Columbus Avenue in Manhattan Valley/UWS. They recently changed their layout and it feels more spacious and easier to peruse their aisles full of grapey goodness and a faster check out process as well. This is actually my favorite store to buy wine without having to feel like I need to be an expert in order to appreciate wine. I am a rum gal myself but the customer service is more laid back than other liquor/wine markets and not in your face about what you are looking for. There are tons of inexpensive bottles and different varietals. A lot of their areas are separated by region but they also have areas designated to white, red, rose, bubbly and dessert wines. Check out their specials with brightly colored signs. They also have some bottles which are not stacked but located at the bottoms of the shelves in bins. They have some pretty fun flavors here as well. On a recent visit I spied the Jellybean brand for Easter and Red Velvet cupcake. They also have labels with funny names like Naked on Rollerskates and Ninja Girl Wine. I saw that they also carried a mulled wine to save you time from boiling a pot of your own with spices. They have a refrigerated section if you are heading straight to a party Tons to choose from if you are looking to make a yummy sangria and I just noticed that they actually have a small Japanese Sake and Plum Wine section now also. The Trader Joe Wine store now has some decent competition by Whole Foods with their Upper West Side wine store and the bonus is that it is not crowded. No lines around the corner of pre-apocalyptic hipster moms stocking up for the end of days. They even have their own brand called Three Wishes to compete with Trader Joes 2 buck chuck. In the $3 range. They make a charitable donation each time you buy a bottle if you want to feel good about your habit of drinking your weight in wine. Not suggested but hey to each their own. Good thing they make wine deliveries too if you buy any case of wine. Certain days they have culinary demonstrations and food tastings for a bite to munch on while you shop for wine as well as wine tastings of course. And for the non fancy schmancy wine drinker/ tailgater, etc. they have boxed wine for every occasion. Always a nice place to stop to grab some wine to bring home if you are shopping for groceries next door. Or also a nice place to stop if buying wine is your idea of grocery shopping. ”
